I was able to choose the output dimensions of the mp4 video, and I chose to reduce to old SD standards for a quick upload to YouTube. On another forum, I was pointed to 'Handbrake' which I'd never heard of, but is open source, and seems to be lean software, and still in development.

Thanks all for your interest and replies.ДЄs recommended, I downloaded the suggested software, but for some reason beyond me, neither application would run - one asked for other software to be already installed (which I then tried), and the other wanted Quicktime installed, and again I installed it. However, I suspect for most of us the use of 4K will be for big-screen projection, when we are summoned to Hollywood, or the local Cinema. Of course, if you were to buy a many-multi-core PC, then in time, you could perform live Edits, provided the Monitor is 4K too. The software houses might add some 'Library shots' to tempt us.for opening sequences, quad-copter scenes, etc.which we'd find inconvenient / expensive to produce 1-off. One suspects this is the way things will go as folks probably embrace 'The Cloud' for ever-fancier software features and will pay 'Per Edit' for that additional power. + For Future-proofing.I understand the latest version (? v13 DYOR), auto-downscales 4K to a 'Proxy-File' that handles just like HD - and only uses the 4K stuff for the final Render when/if you want 4K output.ДЇor AVCHD you won't need that, but later maybe.

I suspect this hinges on MStewarts PC/Software - If upgrading to Win7, you might take advantage of newer HD Editing software like (Sony)Movie Studio which is similar to their Vegas-Pro, without the price-tag.ДЇor everyday Editing older versions like v10 ( but buy the 'Production Suite about ВЈ25 Az and a quad-core PC with a separate Graphics card), as this will produce edited files direct into YT accounts. It's certainly pretty simple using the free editor Virtualdub. How you convert your edited HQX files into mp4 for You Tube will depend on which editor you use. See here for the codec: Grass Valley codecsДЄnd here for the converter utility: AVCHD2HQ converter utility These intermediate files are quite big (about twice the size of DV files), but they are only 'working' files, so don't need to be kept.ДЇor the very latest versions you'll need to register with a (free) Grass Valley account - see here: Login | Grass Valley, a Belden Brand - but you can find the slightly earlier (and just a as good) versions directly on their Taiwan website without registering anywhere. You can then edit that much more easily on an older computer.

It is possible to find a version of the codec that will run on XP, but it's a bit more difficult to locate. YOU DO NEED TO BE RUNNING WINDOWS 7 THOUGH. This allows you to convert HD footage into HQX very easily.

Grass Valley have now made their HQ and HQX codecs freeware, together with their very versatile AVDHD2HQ converter utility. One of the major advantages of using an intermediate format like Grass Valley HQX - or Cineform HD - is that it is much easier to deal with on older PCs.Д¬onverting HD footage to HQX or Cineform gives you an intraframe format which makes editing HD much more like editing DV footage in the 'old days' !
